Resumen:

In this talk we will describe our studies on the structure, magnetism and properties of the (100) magnetite surface. This surface is important for applications such as spin injectors and other roles of magnetite in spintronics. However, its properties have been debated as they differ strongly from those of bulk of magnetite. By means of low-energy electron microscopy and photoemission electron microscopy we have discovered a surface order-disorder transition [1] different from the bulk metal-insulator Verwey transition [2], determined the magnetic spin and orbital iron magnetic moment at this surface [3], and described the role of the surface in the incorporation of Co atoms to form cobalt ferrite [4].
